The turtle moves slowly across the sand, leaving two parallel tracks behind each leg as it drags its shell along with a heavy, steady motion. When something startles it, it pulls its head and legs inside and stays completely still, as if disappearing into its own house. The shell has a pattern made of pieces that fit together, each with its own outline. It likes spending hours in the sun with its neck stretched up and its legs spread out, barely moving at all. Once it reaches the water, the movement changes completely: the legs turn into flippers and the body glides much faster than it did on land.
