Just as the light starts to break, a line of dark shapes waddles clumsily across the ice, taking short steps and swaying from side to side. Reaching the edge, one stops, stretches its neck to look at the water, then dives headfirst, disappearing among the waves. The others wait, some crouched, others stretching short wings to keep balance on the slick surface. A short call repeats through the group, as if they were calling to each other before moving on. When it resurfaces, it shakes its head and swims quickly toward the nearest shore. The cold wind ruffles the feathers slightly as it walks back toward the group. For this page you can use different grays and whites for the feathers and a pale light blue for the ice in the background.
