The hen moves slowly across the yard, glancing back every few steps to keep track of the chicks trailing behind her in a loose line. Now and then she stops, pecks at the ground, and waits for the whole group to catch up before moving on. The chicks, small and a little clumsy, stumble over pebbles and quicken their short steps so they don't fall behind the rest. When one wanders too far, she calls out and it scrambles back toward the group. Around midday they all gather in her shadow near the coop and settle down together, huddled close. When you color this scene, try warm tones for the feathers and give each chick its own shade of yellow, so none of them match exactly.
