A giraffe moves slowly among the trees, stretching its neck toward the highest branches to reach the tender leaves. Its dark tongue curls around each leaf before pulling it free, while its ears flick to keep insects from settling on its skin. When it lifts its head and looks toward the horizon, it notices other animals moving across the plain before they ever spot it. It usually travels with other giraffes grazing nearby, and sometimes two of them wrap their necks together in a gentle gesture. At dusk they stand still near the trees, watching the landscape while the rest of the group rests.
